Why is Protein Important for Weight Loss Surgery Patients?

 

Proteins are molecules made up of amino acids. They are essential parts of organisms and participate in all processes in the body. Proteins can also be used as fuel for the body, like glucose. We are unable to make all of the kinds of amino acids that are necessary for us to survive. These necessary amino acids are called essential amino acids.

High Sources of Proteins: meats, beans, tofu, eggs, nuts, and dairy products.

  • General recommendation of protein intake in the general public are 10 to 35% of your daily calories.
  • Post weight loss surgery patients are recommended to consume 1 to 1.5 G/KG protein per day.
  • Very high amounts of protein intake is not necessarily a good thing. Often people will see higher rates of elevated cholesterol, gout, and possibly kidney injury.
