Better Long-Term Diabetes Outcomes w/ Sleeve Gastrectomy vs Medical Management

According to the recent article Better Long-Term Diabetes Outcomes w/ Sleeve Gastrectomy vs Medical Management in Healio, an online Endocrinology publication, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy helped adults with type 2 diabetes achieve better blood glucose control than standard care alone, according to research presented at the joint meeting of the International Congress of Endocrinology and the Endocrine Society.

After a recent two year study, at study completion, 76% of patients with surgery were able to discontinue or reduce their diabetes medications, compared with 26% of patients receiving medical treatment only; moreover, 52% of patients in the control group required medication increases.

“For these veterans, bariatric surgery could be a possible treatment for not only obesity, but also their obesity related conditions such as diabetes.”
